Welcome to the Nevada Public Library e-newsletter for February.
Love is in the air in February, with Valentine’s Day just around the corner. Be sure to enter the Nevada Public Library Valentine’s Day drawing. Enter your name, or the name of your loved one, to have a chance of winning a Nevada Public Library book bag filled with packages of coffee and hot chocolate, chocolate candies, two mugs and a certificate for a book. You may sign up once a day. The drawing will be on Friday, February 12th and you do not need to be present to win. Good Luck!
The Reading Group will meet on Thursday, February 25th at 1:30 pm to discuss the book, ‘Driftless’ by David Rhodes. This is the All-Iowa Reads book for 2010. Ask for a copy of the book at the Main Desk. Everyone is welcome to join this group discussing books once a month at the library.
If you are thinking about your tax return, the library carries many tax forms and also a number of books to help you. In addition, free tax help is being offered again this year, for taxpayers with low and moderate income, with special attention to those age 60 and older. Appointments are available on Monday afternoons. Please call 515-382-2628 to make an appointment. Spaces are limited.
Sign up for Story Time
The Winter/Spring session of story times will begin the first week of February and continue until April 25th. Call the library to register your child for these free, fun and educational programs. Sessions will include:
Babes in Arms. This program is designed for expectant parents, and for parents with infants or pre-walkers. Parents are a baby’s first and most important teacher. In this pre-literacy program, parents will playfully interact with their infants and will learn rhymes, finger plays, songs and lullabies. Handouts are provided. Wednesdays at 11:00 am.
Toddlers (1 and 2 year olds). This program has lots of movement, songs, rhymes and finger plays, all of which help a child prepare to become a strong reader. Thursdays at 11:00 am.
Preschoolers (3 years and up). This program includes lots of stories, songs, and activities that will reinforce concept learning necessary for reading. Thursdays at 10:00 am or Fridays at 10:30 am.
After School (Kindergarten through 5th grade). This program will feature a light snack, read-alouds and a variety of activities including kid science, movement, board games, puppet play and crafts. Tuesdays 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm.
Read Around the World Story Time
On Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 11 am, there will be a special ‘Read Around the World’ story time. This story time is sponsored and conducted by the local Kiwanis group, who will provide a free book to each child. This is for newborn to grade school children. No sign-up is needed. Call the library if you would like more information.
Recycle and Help Your Library
You can recycle your padded (bubble) shipping envelopes at the library. We mail books to other libraries every day, so if you have any extras, or some left over from Christmas, please bring them in for us to re-use. Also, we continue to take used printer cartridges and cell phones, which we recycle for cash. Thank you for helping the library and recycling at the same time!
As always, happy reading….
PS The Friends Book Sale is on Saturday, January 30th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm in the library basement. Come and pick up some bargains.
