Welcome to the Nevada Public Library e-newsletter for May

New Design for the Library Website

More and more aspects of our lives are impacted by the internet. Many of you are reading this newsletter electronically. Many of you do research online for school projects. Many of you will apply for jobs using the internet. Many of you look online for ideas on what to read next. Many of you download audio books. Many of you keep in contact with your friends and family by any number of electronic ways.

To help you find the online resources that you need, we have completely redesigned the library website. The new website can be your gateway to a vast array of knowledge, entertainment and information. Please take a look at the new site at:
            http://www.nevada.lib.ia.us
I hope you enjoy the new look, but more importantly, I hope you are able to spend some time browsing the content of the site to find out all it has to offer. Please let me know what you think. All feedback will be gratefully received.

Story Time

Summer is just around the corner and we're excited to announce that the summer story time theme this year is 'Be Creative @ Your Library'. We will have many activities, story times and fun programs for you and your family to enjoy. We have the following story time groups:
·    Crib Climbers (Under 2 years) on Thursdays at 10:30am (for 15 minutes)
·    Toe Tappers (2 and 3 year olds) on Tuesdays at 1pm, Wednesdays at 10am or Thursdays at 11am (for 20 –25 minutes)
·    Soloists (4 to 6 year olds) on Tuesdays at 2pm or Wednesdays at 10:30am (for 30 minutes)
·    Picassos (7 to 10 year olds) on Tuesdays at 11am or Wednesdays at 1pm (for 45 minutes)

All groups except the Picassos must register. Registration starts May 1st. Any child younger than 4 years old must have an adult with them during story time. Story times commence the week of June 15th and run until week ending July 24th. Look for further announcements about our Wednesday afternoon specials. Here’s hoping that your summer plans include our summer story time programs.

Telescope Training

There are further opportunities to attend one of the Telescope User training courses. The next sessions are set for Wednesday, May 6th, and Wednesday, June 3rd, at 7:30 pm in the library meeting room. Call 382-2628 or stop at the library to register. You will be trained how to set up, use, and take down the telescope. Please consider taking advantage of this unique opportunity offered by the Nevada Public Library.

Memorial Day

A reminder that the library will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th.

Reading Group

The next Reading Group book is ‘Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World’, which will be discussed at 1:30pm on Thursday, May 28th. This Iowa tale was described by former First Lady of Iowa, Christie Vilsack as follows: “The story of Dewey captures what makes small-town life worth preserving - a sense of community. Dewey rekindles my belief that one person (together with one cat) can change lives. Vicki Myron gives Spencer’s famous library cat a tenth life by writing this engaging biography.” You can pick up a copy of the book from the library.

Congratulations…

…to Patty Valline, who was the lucky winner of our April prize drawing. Patty won a Friends of the Nevada Public Library bag filled with goodies, such as tea, chocolate and books. If you were one of the 316 entries that didn’t win, better luck next time.

Thank you…

…to everyone who brought in a food item or paper good during April. We have collected several hundred items which will be put to good use at the Nevada Community Cupboard.

I hope you can stop by and take advantage of some of these library events and programs. More information about our upcoming events is available on our website.

As always, happy reading…

John
